Clark Derbes uses carved and poly-chromed wood to materialize conceptual art of the highest caliber. These sculptures-of-paintings-of-sculptures explore multiple genres and approaches. The optical effect of the carved–out bas-relief sculpture is immediate and profound, while the rough-hewn surfaces and delicate handling of paint seduces the viewer. The work joins american folk/outsider art traditions with the prehistoric, modern, and futuristic. The artist was born in New Orleans and lives with his wife and son in Vermont.
