In 2006, after devastating hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the Gulf Coast, Marjorie Pierson began a long-term project to illustrate the lush but endangered life in the wetlands of her native South Louisiana.
The swamps and marshes of coastal Louisiana are among the nation’s most fragile and valuable wetlands, and they are rapidly disappearing. Coastal erosion, due to natural causes and human activity, is the culprit. In South Louisiana, the rate of erosion is particularly high.
